RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)
|
Those seeking to be initiated in the Catholic Church undertake a journey of study and preparation, accompanied by parishioners who are R.C.I.A. team members, as well as sponsors who act as personal mentors to those in the process.
This process of Christian initiation was actually common practice in the first centuries of the history of the Church. It fell into disuse by the 7th century, but was revived in our time by the Second Vatican Council held in Rome from 1962-1965.
Adults who have not been baptized are referred to as 'catechumens', a Greek word for learner. RCIA also accommodates those coming from other Christian churches, who are referred to as 'candidates', for full communion in the Catholic Church.
