Are you doing your part by sharing a tithe of treasures?
The answer to this question must be an individual one. The Holy Scriptures suggest that our giving be proportionate to our blessings and our income… in other words, tithing. The formula for tithing is returning to God 10 percent of our whole self:
- 5% to our parish
- 5% to other charities (such as Vocations, Mission Collections, Homeless, Retired Religious, etc.)
We are all challenged by God through the Gospels to embrace this concept. Many believe this is truly the Lord’s plan of providing for the continued support and happiness of His church. Personal testimony from those who do tithe (give 10%) of their time, talent and treasures indicates a great personal satisfaction in using this measurement as a means to show their gratitude to God for the many blessings He has given to them. The important point is that you keep trying until you can honestly say, “Lord, I am now giving my fair share to You in return for all You have given me.”
Giving a portion of money we earn (salaries, investment income, dividends, consulting fees, inheritance, etc.) to our parish and to other charities, including:
- Propagation of the Faith
- Elementary/secondary school endowments
- Foreign missions
- Seminaries and Mother-houses
- Retired religious
- Homeless shelters and food pantries
- The list is endless
Including a Will
By making a Christian Will, the possessions that server your present needs can be designated now to serve others in the future. Few of us think of our Will as a means to make gifts to our parish or to other charitable causes. Yes, including your parish in your Will can be a generous act of gratitude for the many blessings received during your lifetime.
